Remote Tower Technology in Romania

Today, June 15th, Brașov-Ghimbav International Airport became operational. ROMATSA provides air navigation services for the airport from Arad, almost 450 km away. The first flight took off from Henri Coandă-Otopeni International Airport at 7:30 a.m. and landed in good conditions at AIBG at 8:10 a.m.

ROMATSA has technical staff in Brașov who will ensure the maintenance of equipment and systems, as well as staff for the provision of meteorological information services. The air traffic controllers from Arad will provide the air traffic services through the four controller-working positions and the panoramic screen.

The director general of ROMATSA, Mr. Adrian Cojoc, explained that "remote towers ensure a high degree of safety by using advanced technologies, on several levels, to provide air traffic controllers with all the necessary information to direct the plane. Moreover, the level of information provided by the combination of cameras, sensors and other equipment for a remote tower ends up being superior to the classic view from the control tower."

"My words of thanks go to all those who worked, sometimes day and night, on this project. I especially thank the air traffic controllers who accepted the challenge to be the first in Romania to provide air traffic services for the planes remotely, as well as the technicians and meteorologists who support them. In aviation, implementing changes is an arduous process that involves strict adherence to rules and procedures so that any safety risk is prevented. I am glad that together we managed to overcome all obstacles and guarantee the best air navigation services to passengers who will use Brașov airport.

Today we celebrate a unique moment for aviation in Romania, a moment to remember with pride, the way we relate also to the pioneers of aviation or the history of IAR Ghimbav. We have here the technology of the future, but also the glory of the past, in a symbiosis that will lead the development of Brașov county, but also of aviation in Romania, to a new stage", declared the director general of ROMATSA, Mr. Adrian Cojoc.
